Achieving Health in Appalachia Madison County, North Carolina

The U.S. News and World Report recognized Madison County as a leader in providing health and opportunity it's Healthiest Communities series. 

"MARSHALL, N.C. – WHEN Forrest London moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, in the early 1990s, he started seeing a doctor in the regional anchor of Asheville. But he found the experience less than satisfying, and soon began hearing good things from family members about the Hot Springs Health Program in neighboring Madison County.

He gave it a shot, and hasn't looked back since.

"When you walk in the door, they greet you with a smile," says London, a 70-year-old former electrician who lives near the county line. "It's like they're your neighbor."

Though Madison is a rural county of about 20,000 residents that doesn't have its own hospital, London had discovered one of its proudest institutions. He still swears loyalty to the program and his doctor, F.B. "Chipper" Jones, nearly three decades later."
